ACC Rosters As Best We Can Tell In Late May

Things have mostly settled down but could still evolve.

NCAA Basketball: Virginia Tech at Louisville
Mike James and Lynn Kidd will see each other again in ACC play, but not for Louisville and Virginia Tech: James is now at NC State while Kidd is at Miami.
Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

With the portal transfer closing some time ago and NBA Draft decision day now having passed, we have a much better idea of what ACC rosters will look like next year. Over at ESPN, Jeff Borzello breaks it down. We assume you know how Duke will look, but if not, here you go:

  • Tyrese Proctor
  • Caleb Foster
  • Cooper Flagg
  • Khaman Maluach
  • Isaiah Evans
  • Kon Knueppel
  • Patrick Ngongba
  • Darren Harris
  • Sion James (Tulane)
  • Maliq Brown (Syracuse)
  • Mason Gillis (Purdue)
  • Cameron Sheffield (Rice)

We’ve covered Duke’s comings and goings extensively and will do a lot more over the next few months. Today, let’s look at the rest of the ACC and see what we can gather.

The first thing that’s obvious is that roster flux is hitting just about everyone. UNC, State and Notre Dame did better than most, but heavy rebuilds are now the norm. Duke of course had just two players return. So did Florida State. Georgia Tech and Georgia Tech had four. Miami had three. Louisville had none. However, six of their deportees (that’s an autocorrect but it works, so what the hey) remain in the ACC, and seven if you count Jae’Lyn Withers, who got out early).

There are a number of other intra-conference transfers as well, notably TJ Power, Jaden Schutt and Christian Reeves, all from Duke, who ended up at Virginia, Virginia Tech and Clemson, respectively.

Josh Beadle left Clemson for BC, Jaeden Zachery left BC for Clemson, Lynn Kidd left Virginia Tech for Miami, Cam Corhen left Florida State for Pitt, Jaylen Warley left FSU for Virginia, Maliq Brown left Syracuse for Duke and Kevin Miller left Wake Forest for SMU.

In some interesting bank shots, former Tar Heel Dontrez Styles is now at NC State, which should go over well, Matt Cross who played for Miami and Louisville, is now at SMU and Ven-Allen Rubin, who left Notre Dame for Vanderbilt, is now a Tar Heel.

Get it? Got it?

Great!

There are at least three interesting legacies. Dikembe Mutombo’s son, Ryan, also 7-2, is at Georgia Tech, as is Jaylen Forest, son of James. Ace Buckner, son of Clemson legend Greg Buckner, is now a Tiger too, while Cade Tyson, whose brother Hunter recently starred at Clemson, leaves Belmont after one year for UNC. And finally, there is Georgia Tech’s Jaeden Mustaf, son of former Maryland star Jerrod Mustaf, who, it’s fair to say, has a controversial past.

It’s enough to give you whiplash and it’s fair to wonder if fans are disoriented by the rapid movements. On the other hand, you get a chance to do a more or less instant rebuild. In years past, it took 3-4 years to build a program. Now you can do it in a couple of weeks. So there is instant hope. Just look at how new coach Pat Kelsey has reinvigorated the Louisville fan base, virtually overnight.

Of course it’s immensely stressful for the coaches and their staffs, who have to go through two recruiting cycles - the traditional one for freshmen and the new one now for transfers. Someone (several someones most likely) have to run through massive amounts of videotape. You might see a guy like Andrew Rohde, who looked great at St. Thomas but less so at Virginia, where the competition is much more significant. How can you know for sure?

Any way you look at it, building a team is now quite a different experience than ever before. How would you even know where to begin? Duke has big-time talent but a lot of it is quite young, as has been the case for going on 15 years now. Most other schools are much more experienced (Duke has done a great job of bringing in older transfers as well though).

Anyway, here are the current rosters as best we understand them. They might still change.

Note - the classes listed for each player are as listed by ESPN and are for this past season, not next season. However, in a couple of cases we knew they were wrong and fixed it and we don’t always know if someone got an extra year or not. So to simplify, we just went with what ESPN listed, bearing in mind that it is for this past season, not next (at least most of the time).
