Duke Gets A Road Win At Virginia, 60-56

It was a much-needed win after the ugly loss at Louisville

Duke’s trip to Louisville more or less ended in disaster but Sunday’s visit to Virginia was much more successful. The Blue Devils had a turnover problem again, but only about half as many as the 27 they had against the Cardinals (14 vs. Virginia). And Duke didn’t shoot well again, hitting just 2-18 from behind the line and missing 11 of 25 free throws, hitting just 56 percent. Reigan Richardson had 18 to pace Duke while Kennedy Brown racked up 13 points and 18 boards.

But defense carried the day, just as coaches preach: it doesn’t matter how poorly you shoot if you make your opponent shoot worse.

Virginia also had 14 turnovers and while the Cavs shot better from the free throw line (22-26 for 84.6 percent), the rest wasn’t better than Duke’s. Virginia also shot poorly from three point range, just 2-10, and hit 16-54.

It certainly wasn’t a great outing for either team, but it was a whole lot better to win than to lose.

Duke is off for a week until Georgia Tech visits Cameron next Sunday.
