For a medium-sized country, at least population wise, Argentina has an amazing sports culture. In basketball, the Golden Generation was truly brilliant. With players like Manu Ginobili and Luis Scola, Argentina went toe to toe with everyone, including the US. Argentina won gold in 2004 and Ginobili played the game with as much verve as anyone.
But the greatest passion in Argentina, we’re pretty sure, is for soccer. Diego Maradona who passed away in 2023 at just 60, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
Today, fellow Argentine Lionel Messi is widely considered the greatest player in the world.
He has incredible instincts and speed and watching him maneuver, while it isn’t quite as revolutionary as Pelé was in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, the game has evolved and he dominates today as much as Pelé did in his day.
He’s as spectacular in his world as Michael Jordan was in basketball or Michael Phelps in the pool.
