Recruiting can be a funny business. A few weeks ago, Kofi Cockburn seemed clearly open to transferring to Kentucky but according to multiple reports, John Calipari turned him down.
Why?
Well, BBN seemed to think it was because Cal was certain he was going to sign Jalen Duren.
Didn’t happen: Duren announced his choice Friday and he’s going to play for Penny Hardaway and Memphis.
What makes this even better, aside from the sense that there was a major misCALculation, at least according to Planet Kentucky, is that Memphis has long nursed a grudge for Calipari, who not only left the Tigers but took promising talent with him.
We’re sure that some - okay, tons - of Memphis fans are enjoying this and rubbing it in Kentucky’s face, much as BBN likes to go after Duke whenever the Wildcats have beaten Duke since Christian Laettner’s shot in 1992. We say enjoy it, Tigers.
But don’t get too cocky. A lot of people think he’s closer to 6-8 than 6-10 and that while he’s talented, his upside may be limited. So if that’s true, then Kentucky might have gotten a break in the end.
