Duke has changed its Covid policy and will now require fans to mask up for sporting events.

It’s an adjustment due to the surge of the Delta variant of Covid-19 which has really changed the course of the pandemic. This spring, you’ll remember, we seemed to have it more or less behind us.

But it’s back, in a slightly different form, and that means that we’ll have to deal with it.

We saw an interesting article a while back about how we dealt with what came to be called the Spanish Flu, and obviously they lacked the technical expertise we have today. So their primary weapon was observation and they did two things very differently.

First, the hospitals were so crowded that they were forced to put patients outside on the grounds. Those patients seemed to recover more quickly than the ones inside. Today we would probably look at Vitamin D, but that wasn’t discovered until 1952.

And second, and perhaps more importantly, they didn't have air conditioning, at least not in a massive way, and so they built ventilation into everything. Today of course when you go into almost any building, it’s essentially a sealed environment and everything, including virii, gets recirculated.

Ironically it could be an advantage in good old Cameron if they opened all the windows and doors, at least when the weather was suitable for that, and let the fresh air back in.
