Tre Jones Making A Big Impression In Las Vegas

Former Duke point guard is showing what he’s capable of

Former Blue Devil Tre Jones has been terrific in Summer League play where he’s shown the Spurs quite a lot.

The Spurs need a backup point guard and it looks like he’ll have competition from Bryn Forbes, who was with the Spurs from 2016-2020 which could be a plus or a minus when you think about it. They liked him enough to bring him back but they obviously know all of his weaknesses too.

Jones is just getting started and his defense, as we saw at Duke, can be incredible. In the game in Cameron against Syracuse in his freshman year, he was completely dominating Syracuse before he got hurt. It was a stunning performance.

When Butler ascended this year, Davion Mitchell was playing defense at that level. Jones has the potential to be an incredible defender - especially if he’s allowed to focus on his strengths.

And while there are obviously strengths and weaknesses to both players games, Gregg Popovich is pretty old school. He might ultimately decide that Forbes is a better fit for the Spurs but we’re pretty sure that he loves the intensity that Jones brings to defense.
