Hanging out in the Las Vegas airport this time of year is a blast for basketball fans because the NBA Summer League is in town and you see all kinds of players coming through.
Sometimes it’s harder to recognize people when they’re away from the court, particularly because the guys who play in Vegas are the guys who are still trying to break through.
This year, Duke will see nine members of the Brotherhood in the Summer League: Jalen Johnson and Javin DeLaurier (Atlanta), Vernon Carey (Charlotte), Matthew Hurt (Houston), Cassius Stanley (Indianapolis), DJ Steward (Sacramento), Tre Jones and Justin Robinson (San Antonio) and Marques Bolden (Washington).
Summer League play gives young players a chance to get on the court and to make an impression. It’s a great opportunity to catch some eyes and given the history of some of Duke’s success stories, like Quinn Cook, Lance Thomas and Seth Curry, all of whom were undrafted before making their marks, you certainly can’t rule it out. So far, Tre Jones is having a great run this summer.
