Duke Recruiting: Kentucky Perspective On Whitehead, Filipowski

And a possible epic recruiting battle on the horizon

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: NOV 06 State Farm Champions Classic - Duke v Kentucky
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - NOVEMBER 06: Duke Blue Devils assistant coach Jon Scheyer talks with Duke Blue Devils assistant coach Nolan Smith in action during a Champions Classic game between the Duke Blue Devils and the Kentucky Wildcats on November 6, 2018 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianpolis, Indiana.

Although he doesn’t base it on anything he mentions,’s Ben Roberts thinks that Duke is going to get Dariq Whitehead and Kyle Filipowski, both class of ‘22 which would make them part of Jon Scheyer’s first class as Duke’s head coach.

We say that he doesn’t mention anything in particular - as great a gimmick as it is, the Crystal Ball doesn’t count - but presumably he speaks to people around Kentucky basketball and if that’s true, which we assume it is, it would be his background intel for this story.

He then shifts to Dereck Lively.

The rising young big man is apparently not seriously considering UNC but is still looking at Duke and Kentucky.

As Roberts says here, the Duke-Kentucky dynamic will change when Scheyer takes charge. Wildcat fans have carefully kept up with Duke basketball since 1992 when Christian Laettner RAN A SWORD THROUGH THE STILL BEATING HEART OF THE ENTIRE STATE OF KENTUCKY with his dramatic game winner in overtime of the Eastern Regional Finals.

We like to think of it as the wound that never heals.

But of course a new coach won’t be the only change. NIL is arguably a bigger change and no one knows exactly how that will work out.

However, Duke’s massive social media presence, which started because Duke got tired of getting negative media coverage and opted to tell unfiltered stories, is a big deal. It’s by far the biggest social media presence in college basketball and no one knows how it would or could be leveraged in the NIL era.

But it sure as hell doesn’t hurt.
