We were asking the other day if Hubert Davis planned to deviate from the Dean Smith/Roy Williams Basic UNC Basketball Template and the answer, it seems is no.

And yes.

No in that he still plans to stockpile big men. As Jay Bilas has said before, no matter how you slice it, basketball is a big man’s game.

But it looks as if he’s not going to stick with the 1-5 position tags that Smith and Williams used.

First he picked up Brady Manek, a solid shooting big man transfer from Oklahoma who hit 235 career threes for the Sooners.

Dawson Garcia, a 6-11 transfer from Marquette, came over this week and he’ll be a sophomore and also shoots quite well.

Then on Friday, Davis got a major commitment from Jalen Washington, a 5-star prospect from Gary, Indiana (2022). He’s said to be very versatile and much closer than any of the other big men UNC will have to the ideal of positionless basketball.

We forgot to mention Virginia transfer Justin McKoy, who is 6-8 and who brings some versatility as well.

Interestingly, UNC will again have four big men this fall and we’ll have to see if Davis has more luck than Williams in balancing their minutes (Armando Bacot is also back). There’s a pretty good chance that the only one back next fall is McKoy, as the others are all likely to enter the draft or, in Manek’s case, to run out of eligibility.

No matter how you look at it though, Davis has put together a solid group for next year. Now to see what he does with it.
