A Summer ACC Roundup

With news from UNC, Virginia and points beyond

North Carolina v Duke
DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA - MARCH 07: Justin Robinson #50 of the Duke Blue Devils fouls Armando Bacot #5 of the North Carolina Tar Heels during the second half of their game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on March 07, 2020 in Durham, North Carolina. Duke won 89-76.

Two big roster moves for ACC teams: first, Armando Bacot is going to pull out of the draft and return to UNC for his junior season, giving the Tar Heels a reliable presence inside.

Not so lucky: Virginia, as Trey Murphy will not only stay in the draft but hire an agent.

In some ACC alumni news, congrats to former NC State guard Tyler Lewis, now an Elon assistant for Mike Schrage, is a proud new dad. Also on Schrage’s staff, by the way: Dan Dakich’s son Andrew.

Finally, Central Coach LeVelle Moton isn’t in the ACC but might as well be. He grew up in Raleigh, played and coaches in Durham and is keenly aware of area basketball. So leave it to him to post this tweet honoring Nate McMillan and PJ Tucker, both of whom are from South Raleigh and went to Enloe. Moton himself went to Sanderson.

We appreciate him pointing this out. We knew that both guys were from Raleigh but didn’t realize that Enloe would have two former players trying to win the Eastern Conference Finals, with McMillan as a coach and Tucker still playing.

There have always been players to come out of Raleigh - those three along with Randy Denton, Shavlik Randolph, Chris Clemons, Chris Wilcox, John Wall, Pete Maravich, Darius Johnson-Odom, Devonte Graham and Wake’s promising Carter Whitt, among others - and the increase in population means more talent is surely on the way.
