Well here’s some huge news: according to Jeff Goodman, Mike Krzyzewski has decided that this is his final season of coaching.
At 74, obviously he can’t coach forever but the idea of Duke basketball without him seems jarring.
There is no official confirmation of this yet so we’ll have to wait for some definite word.
The obvious candidate, as Goodman points out, is current assistant Jon Scheyer, who is universally respected and the general sense is that he’s going to be a great coach when he moves into a head position, wherever that ends up being.
As we just linked, the Brad-Stevens-to-Duke speculation is heating up again and that would be a fascinating choice for new AD Nina King: do you stick with the promising in-house hire? Or do you take a guy who has proven he is a brilliant talent but who comes from out of the family? This is what she was hired for so we’ll see.
As we said, while Goodman has reported it, there is no confirmation yet.
