So far they’re the only ones

Down in South Carolina, parents of a former Clemson basketball player, O’Neal McBride, are alleging that Tigers coach Brad Brownell was verbally abusive to their son when he played for Clemson.

He has since left the program.

We wouldn’t presume to question the kid’s parents; we’re sure they are reacting as parents would and have his best interests at heart.

However, there is a certain class of Clemson fans who want Brownell gone and this site is clearly part of that.

Could Clemson become a different sort of program? It’s always been one of the weaker ACC basketball programs with a real focus on football instead. However, there have been stretches of good play under Bill Foster, Cliff Ellis, Oliver Purnell and, yes, Brownell.

Our take has always been that with the right guy, any program can thrive. It’s just a question of finding the right guy.

Brownell has done reasonably well but certainly hasn’t matched the ACC elite. A few years ago, remember, he was nearly replaced by Will Wade but LSU made, uh, a strong-ass offer and he took his problems there instead.

Still, the right guy could build something solid and it’s not like Brownell’s record is awful
