As you know, former Marquette big man Theo John changed his mind about spending another year in college and decided to take his bonus season at Duke.

In this article from the Milwaukee paper, John talks about why he changed his mind, what convinced him to play at Duke, and why he chose the number he will wear.

On the first and second points, John said Chris Carrawell was a big factor since he had worked for Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski during his freshman year, but Coach K also played a key role:

“He felt like that if I came there we could win a national championship, [a]nd we could win a lot of games together and learn a lot.

“I’ve always dreamed of making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. When Coach K calls, you got to pick up and hear him out.”

And why did he pick #12 to wear at Duke after wearing #4 at Marquette?

Because of Wojo: “After four years of learning from him, I hope at least I can wear the number.” Wojciechowski of course wore 12 at Duke and JJ Redick wore #4, so that one probably wasn’t possible.
