As many of you know, recruiting legend Tom Konchalski died in February of this year of prostate cancer.
The word “legend” is not used lightly in his case. He touched countless lives and was renowned for his innate decency.
Along with Howard Garfinkel, in sort of an Odd Couple pairing, Konchalski ran the Five-Star camp where countless players made their names including some Duke players.
Five-Star was ultimately left behind as AAU ball began to rise but Konchalski merely adapted. He knew essentially every coach and not only knew the high school players every year, he knew where they would fit best, too.
He was always honest and respected by everyone who came in contact with him.
One of his great friends was Adam Zagoria, who, among other things, runs Zagsblog.com. He posted a Zoom video on his site featuring a number of basketball people, including Mike Krzyzewski, who talk about what kind of a man Konchalski was and why he was so beloved. Coach K is first up, so you won't have to skip to find his comments.
Kudos to Zagoria for doing this.
