On Friday, everyone was talking about Duke, Virginia and Kansas but the real action was in the Michigan-Maryland game.
It took a few years, but Maryland is starting to piss off Big Ten schools just like they did ACC schools back in the day although that’s not to say that Michigan coach Juwan Howard is blameless.
If you missed it, and just about everyone did live because it happened during a time out, Howard and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon got into it in a big way.
Howard claims that Turgeon charged him and that he acted in self-defense.
Keep in mind that Howard is 6-9 or so and a solidly built man. Turgeon was a point guard best described as scrappy and a pest. But that’s not to say that Howard was entirely wrong to take exception either although he certainly could have kept a cooler head.
For his part, Turgeon emphasizes his 30+ years of experience, seems to see this as part of a three-game problem and said that he’s referred it to the Big Ten Commissioner. Here are the presser links and some local news links as well in addition to the rather intense game footage.
Hilariously, Turgeon says there’s a rumor that he said something about a banner, presumably the Fab Five banners that Michigan took down after the Chris Webber scandal surfaced. He denies saying anything about a banner.
