We’ve talked a bit about the perception that Jon Scheyer is off to a better start in recruiting than UNC’s Hubert Davis is, partly because, well, as Duke folk we are required to grab that baby blue chain and yank the holy hell out of it when we have the chance.
But a couple of realistic notes: first, recruiting classes are measured when they’re done, not when they arrive. And second, despite making fun of the Heels, we don’t really want them to be awful.
We just want Duke to be better.
The truth is, it’s not good for Duke or the ACC for UNC to be bad. And there’s not much question that at the end of the Roy Williams era, the Tar Heels had slipped.
But for this year, Davis pulled together a pretty good group and it’s not like his recruiting so far has been bad. It’s not peak Dean Smith good but it’s probably better than the last couple of years of the Williams era.
And Friday night it got better as Simeon Wilcher committed to UNC Friday night. Barring injury or some unforseen development, Wilcher is going to be good.
It’s been a good stretch for ACC recruiting: Notre Dame picked up JJ Starling, Miami bagged AJ Casey and Danilo Jovanovich, Clemson picked up promising Chauncey Wiggins and Syracuse picked up rising big man Pete Carey.
