Injuries are part of sports and especially part of football which NBA legend Bill Russell once said was a collision sport not a contact sport.
Even so, some have bigger impacts than others. And losing both your cornerbacks, especially one who worked for two years to get back on the field, is just devastating.
That’s what’s happened to Duke though.
Both starters, Mark Gilbert and Josh Blackwell, are out indefinitely following surgery.
Blackwell has a torn right meniscus which could certainly end his season. And Gilbert, who has fought for two years to get his career back on track, had a less serious operation to take a bone fragment out of his foot.
We don’t know anything medically but we’d be more optimistic about Gilbert’s return. We really hope he can make it back after everything he’s been through.
Obviously the team has to find two guys to step up. Losing both starters makes things much more challenging in Charlottesville Saturday.
