Mark Gottfried Just Won’t Go Away

Show him the money. And the door.

ACC Basketball Tournament - First Round

Usually when you fire a coach, after a decent period of negotiations, he’s happy to go away.

Hasn’t happened with Mark Gottfried.

Fired by NC State in 2017, Gottfried left a serious NCAA investigation as a parting gift. Now he’s filed suit against the university because he says he hasn't received his buyout payments since 2018.

We have no idea what actually happened here but in the meantime, the Adidas/FBI scandal erupted with allegations that NC State paid Dennis Smith a lot of money to come to Raleigh.

Presumably now, NC State will cite that as a reason to no longer pay Gottfried and has the option of putting him on the stand to testify under oath.

In other words, we’re not sure that Gottfried has very much leverage.

We will say this for the former Wolfpack coach: he’s had the best ACC rumors since Phil Ford was at UNC.
