On this episode of the DBR Podcast, we are back to basketball. First up, we talk about Nolan Smith’s flirtation with an assistant coaching position at Memphis with Penny Hardaway, a move that would have technically been a promotion for Nolan, although he opted to stay in Durham. What does this mean for Nolan’s future and that of the Duke assistant coaching bench? Jason brings some good historical data to this one.
We move, then, to the NBA, where Jayson Tatum and the Celtics are heading to Eastern Conference Finals to face Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. It may not be LeBron vs. Paul Pierce, but it should be great television. How did Tatum get so good at both ends of the floor?
After the break, the gang dives into the ACC’s proposal to let every eligible team into the field of however many it takes to stage a massive NCAA tournament next spring. Feasible? Maybe not. Revealing? Absolutely.
Speaking of finances, the gang wraps this week with an update from Duke Athletics about its current financial position. As you might expect, it’s a tough year for the Duke Athletic department.
