Recruiting is a funny business to say the least. Not only do individual pursuits turn on the oddest things sometimes. Sometimes it’s something as trivial as a whimsy.
In a way though the most fun thing is when a guy blows up out of nowhere. This happened with Tracy McGrady, who got so much attention at the end of his time at Durham’s Mt. Zion that he just went straight to the NBA.
Sometimes you hear a story about a guy who a staff caught on to who they really hope they can keep secret before everyone else figures out how good he is. Ja Morant might have been that sort of a recruit.
Occasionally you hear about guys like David Robinson, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman, who developed in college.
It’s just a crap shoot at times, especially with big men.
Which brings us to Jonas Aidoo, who played for Voyager Academy in Durham before transferring to Charlotte’s Liberty Heights Athletic Institute.
He’s gone from being mediocre and uncertain to drawing significant offers from schools like Clemson and South Carolina. Steve Wojciechowski and Marquette offered on Monday.
Virginia Tech has offered too.
We don't know much about him but it’s always cool to see it come together for a young player.
