As football season draws closer, the realties of having a season during a pandemic grow clearer.

In Raleigh, NC State has 22 more cases in the athletic department and has put sports on pause pending more testing. Obviously they’d like to know as much as possible before moving forward.

Amazingly, the pandemic has brought bitter rivals NC State and UNC together with the NC State Technician praising the Daily Tar Heel and calling on the UNC Board of Governors to “fix this or resign.” Newspapers from several UNC system schools have signed the editorial as has the editorial board of the Duke Chronicle.

The good news is that the testing is vastly improved. The university reports that there are 63 more cases in seven specific locations. That’s a far cry from not very long ago when we had no idea at all outside of the hospital reports and deaths.

How long will all of this last?

It’s impossible to say. Even trained scientists can’t agree. This article lists four scenarios for how it might end though and it’s worth your time to read it.

In the meantime, probably the single best decision you can make as a college student right now is not to drink. There’s nothing about drinking that will help this situation.
