In 1985, Duke’s foundational class of Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie, Jay Bilas, David Henderson and Weldon Williams were juniors.
The previous spring, Duke had made the NCAA Tournament for the first time under Mike Krzyzewski and lost to Washington, 80-78 in the first round.
So Duke scheduled the Huskies in Cameron on January 12th.
Marv Harshman was coaching and had developed a bit of a German pipeline with Christian Welp at center and Detlef Schrempf all over the place.
At 6-9, Schrempf could play point guard, which was still somewhat unusual then.
Duke handled the Huskies, 71-59 to move to 12-0 on the young season. Duke would lose the next two games to Maryland and Wake Forest.
Interestingly, in the 1985 NCAA Tournament, Duke would lose to Boston College which was coached by a young Gary Williams who would later move to Maryland where he would develop a significant rivalry with Duke.
