People were shocked when the New York Giants took Daniel Jones with the #6 pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Boos followed, then jeers in the media - until training camp.
His new teammates raved, then the press caught on and raved and finally the fans saw why New York took him so early: he’s an immensely promising young quarterback, as much for his mentality as his physical gifts, which is saying a lot.
He was truly fortunate to go to New York where he got to work for a season with Eli Manning.
Manning of course also played for David Cutcliffe, who coached Jones at Duke and Manning at Mississippi. At 38, he was clearly near the end of his career and proved to be a superb mentor for his young apprentice, who quickly surpassed him.
Now? It continues. Manning said Jones would be better off with him gone because then the team was truly his.
Obviously Manning is a supremely competitive guy, but he’s also someone with some real character and decency.
