LaVar Is Having A Ball Again

Some things never change

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Pelicans

He toned things down for a while after some embarrassments and setbacks, but pretty clearly LaVar “the Lip” Ball is back.

This time he’s intent on pushing his son’s LaMelo and Lonzo at the expense of current teammate (and former Blue Devil) Zion Williamson and, to a lesser extent, Lonzo’s former team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now he’s saying that LaMelo is more popular globally than Williamson. And as for Lonzo and the Pelicans...“Take my boy out the situation and see how much buzz you get. He’d probably still be out for the season. I don’t care how fast you can run and jump, if you ain’t got nobody to get you that ball, guess what you going to be doing? Running and jumping out there for nothing.”

At this point, there’s not much sense in trying to point out Daddy Ball’s lack of logic and obviously he’s entitled to take pride in his sons, no matter how much damage he has done to their careers.

It’s possible LaMelo might be huge globally. He’s done very well in minor league competition which is what the NBL is.

However, the idea that Williamson would be nothing without Lonzo is ridiculous. The truth is that he has unlocked Lonzo’s potential like no one else could. The two of them are devastating together, like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice or Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

Williamson’s spectacular physical gifts sometimes obscure his intellect. Yes he is widely (we meant to say wildly but either one will do) talented but he also brings a formidable mind to the game. He’s not all that far behind Ball as a passer.

When he goes on these tirades, you have to imagine that Lonzo, and soon LaMelo, pick up the phone, call a teammate and say, “listen man, about my dad....”
