ESPN has a list of 40 coaches under 40 who are highly promising. And checking at #9 on the list is Duke’s Jon Scheyer, just 32.
Here’s what the article says about Scheyer: “After winning a national championship with the Blue Devils, Scheyer played overseas for a couple of seasons and then went back to Durham to join Mike Krzyzewski’s staff. He has developed as a recruiter and has played a key role in Duke’s highly ranked recruiting classes. The next in line to reach head coach from the Krzyzewski coaching tree.“
They don’t mention this but Scheyer’s public moment of glory this season was when he planted the seed of lining up and shooting to the right when you want to intentionally miss a foul shot with Tre Jones. He used the advice against UNC and, happily, the ball came off the rim exactly where he wanted it to. That shows an unusual level of detailed thinking which isn’t surprising really. We used to marvel watching Scheyer because he could play for really long stretches without making a mistake. It was kind of shocking when he did actually.
