And Duke is still in it

Memphis guard Kennedy Chandler has cut his recruiting list down to five: Duke, Memphis, Tennessee, UNC and Kentucky.

Memphis has a significant advantage in that the university is just 14 minutes or so from Briarcrest Christian, Chandler’s high school, which makes unofficial visits a short ride away.

And the Tigers have mined their hometown for talent for decades. There’s not really an equivalent we can think of. Maryland is right in the middle of the DMV but the best players leave there on a regular basis.

It’s just really hard to think of an equivalent home town advantage although Arkansas at times has really recruited Memphis well, notably under Nolan Richardson.

It’s not absolute though. Duke won a commitment from Elliot Williams, although he later transferred back home, and UNC had Leslie McDonald.

So it does happen. It’s just a unique situation.

This is going to be an interesting recruitment. Tennessee has also recruited Memphis over the years and Kentucky and UNC are never easy to beat out for players.

All that said, and take it for what it’s worth, the Crystal Ball has him at 100% for Duke.
