It surprised us a bit that Clemson QB Chase Brice chose Duke. He’s from a major football power and while Duke has certainly improved, it’s not at that level. We figured a guy like that would look for a Top Twenty program that was in need of a QB.
Turns out though that Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has a ton of respect for David Cutcliffe and recommended Duke to his departing QB.
Another coach, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, had told him earlier that Duke’s scheme was really hard to prepare for and that left an impression too.
Part of it too was this: “What really sold me on Duke was obviously the opportunity to go in and play under a great coach like coach Cutcliffe. But ultimately it was the people that led me to Duke. I’m so used to having a great coaching staff, teammates and all of that from high school to college at Clemson — the family feel. When I got to hang out with the guys and hang out with the coaches, it just felt like home.”
