Vernon Carey Sweeps ACC Weekly Honors

Big week for the big guy

Duke freshman Vernon Carey won ACC Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week Monday after his work against Pitt and Syracuse.

Carey scored 26 points in each game and grabbed 13 rebounds against the Eagles and 17 against the Orange.

By any standard, those are men’s game, as the Plumlees would have put it. He was highly regarded coming out of high school but we’re not sure anyone expected this kind of production.

For the season, he’s averaging 17.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg and hitting 59.7 percent from the floor. Not bad for a freshman. Not bad for anyone, really.
