Here’s a small bit of very good news: Duke commit AJ Griffin (2021), who injured his knee in January, is back on the court.
You may recall that when Griffin went down there were concerns that it was a very serious injury. As it turns out, it was relatively mild.
Griffin’s high school teammate at Archbishop Stepinac, RJ Davis, has committed to UNC, thus making them the latest pair of high school teammates to choose sides in the greatest rivalry in sports (There are more but Jim Spanarkel and UNC’s Mike O’ Koren went to the same high school. Gerald Henderson and Wayne Ellington chose Duke and UNC respectively after graduating from high school in 2006; most recently Leaky Black and Wendell Moore came to UNC and Duke after careers at Concord’s Cox Mill High. Black graduated in 2018 and Moore in 2019. The school opened in 2009 and already has three state championships, which is pretty amazing).
You have to wonder if Griffin and Davis, obviously having a mutual interest, watched the Duke-UNC game together on February 8th. That would have been pretty funny to see.
If not, imagine Griffin calling him right afterwards or when he first saw him. We imagine him laughing and teasing, in a friendly but emphatic way, the way you do when you want to get under someone’s skin but still have to get along with them.
All we can say is welcome to America’s finest sporting rivalry, gentlemen. Buckle up!
