A wonderful blast from the past

Here’s a welcome blast from the past: a visit by Larry Brown and Kansas to Reynolds to take on Jim Valvano’s Wolfpack.

Aside from the star power of Brown and Valvano, there were some great players in this game: Danny Manning, Vinny Del Negro, Chucky Brown and Charles Shackleford, who was legendarily amphibious (“I can go to my left. I can go to my right. I’m amphibious”).

This was when players typically stayed in college for four years. Take Manning for instance.

Already seen here as the inevitable National Player of The Year, Manning would go on to win the national championship with the team that was called Danny And the Miracles.

NC State went on to finish 24-6 and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Jim Valvano would coach just two more years and in five would be dead of cancer at the age of 47.

Also of note here: ABC paired the hyperkinetic Dick Vitale with the legendary Keith Jackson. That alone is worth your time.

So is a glance back at Reynolds.
