ACC Roundup - Yellow Jackets Sting Hornets

As Jose Alvarado shines

Jose Alvarado is not going to be an NBA player. We said that when he signed with Georgia Tech but we also pointed out that he was likely to be a four-year point guard and would probably be a pretty good one by the time he was through.

That was about right. He’s been a tough, competent point guard for three+ seasons and occasionally exceptional. And that’s what he was against Delaware State Sunday night.

Alvarado finished with 29 points on 11-14 and 5-6 from the floor as Georgia Tech won 97-69.

It was a 10-point lead at the half but Alvarado helped the Yellow Jackets pull away in the second half.

Moses Wright added 16 and Jordan Usher 10. Khalid Moore had 11 points off the bench.

With the win, Tech moves back over .500 as ACC play looms after one more tune up, this time with UAB, now coached by former NC State player Andy Kennedy.

Three games on tap for Monday as Morehead State visits Clemson, Gardner-Webb heads down to Florida State to meet some angry ‘Noles after being upset by UCF and Longwood goes to Cassell to play the Hokies. That’s as close to a lock as you can get - Longwood is just 1-6 and far from a powerful program.

Small note: before he left Tallahassee, Jimbo Fisher was pushing Florida State to join a “real” football conference. Before the ACC Championship game between Clemson and Notre Dame, he was pitching his Texas A&M team for the four team college football playoffs. Sunday he had to watch as two ACC teams - yes, it’s a one-year deal for the Irish but still - taken ahead of his Aggies for the playoffs.

You just wonder what was going through his head. It probably wasn’t pretty.
