The Duke Chronicle’s annual tradition of player profiles continues with a look at the ebullient DJ Steward.
The 6-3 native of Chicago has a well-earned reputation as an exquisite shooter. He’ll have to play defense too but never underestimate the value of a great shooter. It would be the biggest shock of the season if Steward doesn’t get major minutes.
Like classmate Henry Coleman, Steward’s personality almost guarantees that he’ll be a fan favorite.
Unlike Coleman though, who is solidly built, Steward weighs a slim 163. Yet that may not be as big a factor as people think. Growing up a ballplayer in a place like Chicago, much like New York, Detroit or the DMV, means you’re going to have to get used to physical play.
And it’s not like he’s the first thin player to come through the ACC who excelled. There have been plenty - Clyde Austin, Juan Dixon and Johnny Dawkins among them. Mike Dunleavy too.
