By coincidence, we did a YouTube Gold on Bobby Hurley Sunday talking about his toughness so this is a nice follow up: he was a guest Monday on Dan Dickau’s podcast, The Iso.
Dickau, for those who may not know, was point guard for Gonzaga who had an eight-year career in the NBA.
Like Hurley, he was drafted by the Sacramento Kings. Hurley’s career was derailed by his very serious accident though and he was never the same player - but who would have been? He was lucky to survive and to play again at all was a minor miracle, much less getting back to the NBA.
His Duke career is still stunning to contemplate: three Final Fours, two titles, the NCAA career assist record and moments of sheer brilliance.
We’ve mentioned this before but it’s one of the greatest plays we’ve ever seen in Cameron. This was in a holiday game and the Crazies weren’t there so downstairs was open. We watched as the ball started to go out of bounds near mid-court. Hurley ran after it, leaped into the stands, caught it on his right side, turned in the air, and hit a teammate heading towards the basket. It was just incredible.
Anyway, we haven’t listened to this yet but it sounds promising. Hurley had a remarkable collegiate career and listening to two point guards talking shop is going to be a lot of fun.
