NBA 2020 Draft - Vernon Carey Goes To Charlotte, Seth Curry Traded To Philly

Charlotte is a significant opportunity for Carey

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: JAN 08 Duke at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA, GA JANUARY 08: Georgia Tech’s Jose Alvarado (10) goes to the basket against Duke’s Vernon Carey, Jr. (1) during the NCAA basketball game between the Duke Blue Devils and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on January 8th, 2020 at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta, GA.

As Round 1 ends, no Duke players were drafted but that changed quickly in the second as Vernon Carey was selected by the Hornets with the #32 pick.

It’s a solid opportunity for him. The Hornets front court includes Cody Zeller, Willy Hernangomez, Ray Spalding, Jalen McDaniels, Nicolas Batum and Bismack Biyombo.

Only Zeller got as much as 23 mpg last season so you have to think Charlotte isn’t thrilled with its big men.

Carey also has whipped himself into tremendous condition and will be able to unleash a more versatile game with the Hornets. Most people don’t realize that in high school, Carey was a perimeter player. He learned the basics of playing inside from Nate James, and clearly both teacher and student did well.

Earlier in the evening, former Blue Devil Luke Kennard was traded to the Clippers and just before Carey we selected, former Dukie Seth Curry was acquired by Philadelphia, where he’ll play for his father-in-law Doc Rivers and will help provide much needed shooting.
