It’s natural to watch basketball and watch for offense. You have to score to win obviously and it’s an important part of the game.

Defense is less flashy. It’s more subtle and most people just wait for the shots.

Sometimes though some guys really stand out. When Patrick Ewing came along he was a spectacular shot blocker. Last year Zion Williamson stunned people with his blocks, particularly when he seemed to cross 23 of the court to block a sideline three pointer by De’Andre Hunter.

It generally takes a lot to get noticed as a perimeter defender. Tre Jones has done it.

As a freshman he was an incredibly tenacious defender. We watched him stalk people and strip them face to face, or come around from behind, or catch them in mid-air.

He’s a relentless defender and watching him operate is an absolute pleasure. The guy is a great defender.
