This is the fourth straight season the ACC saw at least one head coaching change, and the seventh in the past six years.

The newcomer in 2019-20 is Virginia Tech’s Mike Young, a Virginian returning home after spending 17 years at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. Young’s record with the Terriers in his only head coaching stint was 299-244 (.545). He guided the program to five NCAA berths in the past 10 years.

Last season’s 30-5 record was the best of Young’s tenure and a highwater mark for the program. The Terriers broke into the AP poll, rising to No. 20. Undefeated in Southern Conference play, Wofford was a No.7 seed in the NCAAs and defeated Seton Hill for the first NCAA victory in the school’s Division I history.

Young, a Radford native, joins NC State’s Kevin Keatts as Virginians coaching in the ACC. North Carolina and New York lead with three ACC head coaches each. Young also stands among three coaches working in their home state, along with North Carolinian Roy Williams of UNC and New York’s Jim Boeheim at Syracuse.

Five head coaches are in their 40s. Four are 70 or older. The average age is 57, one year older than Young.

Four returning head coaches have losing ACC records: BC’s Jim Christian, Georgia Tech’s Josh Pastner, Pitt’s Jeff Capel and Wake Forest’s Danny Manning.
