For the most part, with a few notable exceptions, the Duke-UNC rivalry is for the fans.

The year-round stuff that is.

The players on both sides get geeked up for the games but the daily back and forth is mostly by and for the fans.

Some of the players actually are pretty close. Take Nolan Smith and Brice Johnson.

They’re pretty clear on where they stand about the rivalry, but they’re actually very good friends and they work together on a special project.

For this, the third year, they’re going to have a two-day Hoopathon in the Smith Center and Cameron to raise money for Teen Cancer America.

It’s a chance to see some solid hoops in an intimate setting and to raise money for cancer at the same time. What could be better than that?
