Gregg Popovich succeeded Coach K as the coach of Team USA and while his approach is different, they have something key in common: they both have a military background.
Mike Krzyzewski famously attended West Point where he played for Bobby Knight; Popovich went to the Air Force Academy and was a serious candidate for the 1972 team that lost to the Soviets in a deeply controversial game.
Popovich, as much as anyone could be, is committed to the United States basketball team. He has a tougher job in many ways than Coach K did, primarily because so many talented players decided to take a pass or injured.
The US opens on Sunday at 8:30 am. This team has faced a lot of skepticism, particularly after the upset loss to Australia, but the team is united and focused and Popovich is as motivated as he’s ever been.
Whatever happens, we hope that US fans give them the support they deserve.
