We’ve talked periodically about how, just a couple of minutes into the 2001 title game, Billy Packer blurted out “looks like Duke’s getting all the calls tonight!”
Or words to that effect. His meaning was pretty clear.
He said this after Arizona’s Jason Gardner went low and Duke’s Jason Williams landed on his hands, making a bridge over Gardner but not actually touching him. If Gardner had stood up it would have been a clear foul. But he didn’t.
We always paid attention to him because Duke had pursued him too and was on his list fairly late.
So we thought it was pretty cool when he got the IUPUI job.
Well cool no more: Gardner has resigned following an arrest for OWI (operating with influences). That’s sad news professionally but much more so personally. We’re glad he didn't hurt anyone.
IUPUI is not likely to set off a late spin on the coaching carousel, but there is a job open and someone will take it although it will probably be an assistant or someone who is currently out of the game. Why not call Rick Pitino? If he’s willing to consider Siena, then why not IUPUI?
Update: assistant head coach Byron Rimm II has been named interim head coach for the upcoming season.
