Willis Reed was the center, in more ways than one, for the New York Knicks in their glory years.
His most famous moment was coming out for Game 7 against the Los Angeles Lakers in 1970. His mere entrance inspired his team and he played for some time on a mostly useless knee. It was truly courageous.
His most infamous moment may have also come against the Lakers.
Some guys you just don't want to provoke. Getting into a fight with Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O’ Neal, Kermit Washington, or Calvin Murphy was a major mistake for anyone.
So when L.A’s. Rudy LaRusso got into it with Reed, he should have known it was a mistake.
If not, he figured it out quickly: Reed broke his jaw. He also took on the rest of the team and, apparently, to listen to Phil Jackson and Jerry West, pretty much won the fight.
