This article points out that Duke’s Coach K made a smart decision to not take the LA Lakers’ job in 2004.

That was never going to happen anymore than any other offer was going to happen and the reason is simple: all of his family lives in Durham and most of it is incorporated into the basketball program.

It would mean uprooting multiple families and for what? Three or four years of great money?

Almost all pro coaches get fired eventually. It was never going to happen. However, the Olympics gig was great because first the team was hand picked of the very best and second he didn't have to move. Toss in the patriotism and you can’t beat it.
