Duke target Walker Kessler cut his list to six Friday and here they are:
- Auburn
- Cal
- Duke
- Gonzaga
- Michigan
- Carolina
Not listed: Georgia, where he has a significant family history. Also, Auburn is the only SEC school listed.
What’s notable here is that most of these schools are superior academically. Auburn is the outlier there along with UNC, where the long-running academic fraud should concern any family with academic aspirations. UNC avariciously exploited athletes then cast them aside when their eligibility was up.
Auburn may also have an issue - the university expects to hear from the NCAA soon. Former assistant Chuck Person was convicted recently in the Adidas case (he was lucky to avoid jail time). That might affect Kessler’s thinking.
Cal is kind of surprising since they’ve struggled lately, as has the PAC-12 in general. On the other hand, he’d certainly be the star from Day One.
The most likely contenders, to us anyway, seem like Duke, Gonzaga, Michigan and UNC, if you can get past the stench of the scandal.
As always though our opinions are irrelevant. The kid will do what he thinks is best for him as he should.
