Duke University Blue Devils Men’s Basketball
Gene Banks in his Duke glory days

When Lefty Driesell got to Maryland in 1970 he promised to turn it into the “UCLA of the East.”

Didn’t quite happen but Maryland was plenty good in the 1970s and ‘80s. Driesell was a terrific recruiter and underappreciated coach.

A Duke grad, the Crazies loved to taunt him and he didn’t really seem to mind it too much. Certainly he was more fun than Gary Williams.

This game was well before Duke surpassed Maryland which eventually led to some of the ugliest ACC fan stuff since South Carolina’s bunker mentality under Frank McGuire as Maryland fans had a tough time accepting Duke’s consistent superiority.

Still, it was a good stretch of basketball between the two. If you know Kenny Dennard or Buck Williams, ask them about undercutting in the ACC tournament. They’re good buddies now but they’ll never agree on that.

This is the full game. It’s a bit fuzzy but still worth your time.
