The down side of major hype is that it eventually goes the other way. This is true for almost everyone. Last season even LeBron James saw his hypometer dialed way back.
For Zion Williamson right now it’s weight with Seth Greenberg weighing in, saying that Williamson is “significantly overweight.”
His body is going to be a significant challenge for him in a way that former Duke teammates RJ Barrett or Cam Reddish will never know. As magnificent as his gifts are, he’s going to have to work hard to keep his weight down and critically, to keep himself injury free.
As noted the other day, Williamson has been dealing with the business end of the snake lately and may not have taken the time to get into the gym like he did at Duke.
It shouldn’t be too big of a worry though. He’s young and wildly talented and as Pelicans exec David Griffin noted, wants to be great. He’ll be ready when it’s time.
By the way, he’ll have a new teammate who can certainly advise him on the issue: former Blue Devil Jahlil Okafor has entirely transformed his body and while Williamson doesn’t need to do an overhaul of that magnitude, Okafor could prove to be a valuable resource for the celebrated rookie.
Sobering thought for his future rivals: that guy who wrestled the ball from Kevin Knox and dunked it? That’s the out-of-shape Zion. The other one will show up soon.
