It’s changed a bit lately but generally speaking, when you think about the Triangle, Garner doesn’t spring to mind quickly.

It’s a smaller town fairly close to Johnson County and it’s always been pretty blue collar compared to the rest of the Research Triangle but that too is changing.

The town is growing in a lot of ways and one way it is making a name for itself is through sports. Garner High has a very fine football program and basketball has become a real force in recent years too.

The NBA’s David West is a native as is former Tar Heel Donald Williams (you can't have everything). So is John Wall, though he grew up in Raleigh. Bonus trivia: former Duke football coach Carl Franks grew up in Garner.

Garner’s AAU program has become pretty powerful and youth basketball in general is thriving. So maybe it wasn’t a huge surprise to see Zion Williamson show up to check out Garner’s summer league where his nephew, Julius play.

His brother, Noah Anderson, will also play in Garner next year and the pair will ensure curious recruiters will keep an eye on the league for the next several seasons.
