2015 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic - Kent State v Southern Methodist
LAS VEGAS, NV - DECEMBER 22: Head coach Larry Brown of the Southern Methodist Mustangs looks on before his team’s game against the Kent State Golden Flashes during the 2015 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic basketball tournament at the Orleans Arena on December 22, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Southern Methodist won 90-74. The game marks Brown’s return from a nine-game suspension.

To be clear this is speculation. However, it’s worth looking at. Here’s the basic idea: Memphis coach Penny Hardaway would like to hire 78-year-old Larry Brown. Apparently he has already tried once and Memphis said no. However circumstances have changed a bit.

To back up, Brown, who played for Dean Smith at UNC, left UCLA and the Bruins had a Final Four appearance vacated, left Kansas and the Jayhawks got probation, then left SMU and the Mustangs got it too.

No one doubts his basketball intelligence but the man has a bad track record and at SMU treated academics like, well, like he was following the UNC Way.

We’d be astonished if Memphis allowed this to happen but it’d be very entertaning to watch.

He’d be an assistant coach and would spend most of his time teaching but as his old pal Art Heyman used to say, “Larry’s only happy when he’s unhappy.”

Fans of train wrecks so want this to happen.
