While we wouldn't rule out Jordan Goldwire starting as a battle-hardened senior, odds are Duke’s replacement for Tre Jones committed Wednesday when Jeremy Roach picked the Blue Devils.
A skilled 6-2 point guard, we’re not sure he’ll defend as well as Tre Jones does - not many do - but he’ll bring a solid tool kit of his own.
Roach told 24/7 Sports that “I just felt like as soon as I went down there it was right for me. It was just a gut feeling in everybody’s stomach, even my sister, my brother, my dad and my mom. I went everywhere, I went to Kentucky and Villanova, I just didn’t feel the same way I did at Duke.”
Doubly sweet: he picked Duke over UNC, Virginia and Maryland.
The nice thing about getting a point guard early in your class is that he’s going to get other guys interested because they know they can trust the driver. So we’ll see who follows.
Back to Goldwire.
Duke showed this year that he could be an amazing backcourt mate. As he gains experience he’ll continue to improve and like Jones he’s a wonderful defender. Overlook him at your own peril.
