Duke was fortunate enough to sign football coach David Cutcliffe to a two-year extension which was announced Friday.

We say that because we think that while Cutcliffe is a fine coach and has breathed life into the corpse that once was Duke football, something that no one and at one point even Cutcliffe wasn’t sure it was possible - he drove to Durham for his interview so that he could leave immediately if he decided it was as hopeless as it seemed, he’s been more than a good football coach.

He’s proven to be an unusually good man and we don’t say that lightly. The old trope of coaches making men out of boys has been corrupted like so much of collegiate sports. Its rare to find coaches who are interested in more than wins and losses.

Cutcliffe is honest and decent and just a good man. We don’t think he’s going anywhere but if had been our decision, we would have told him the job is his for as long as he wants it and made it a lifetime contract. He’s earned that and more.
