Now that the lottery is over, the machinations begin. Was Zion Williamson unhappy about going to New Orleans? Did he really want to be a Knick?
According to this story, Williamson was disappointed and to be honest, we didn’t think he exactly looked thrilled. We’ve seen enough of him to know that he would never come out and say that though and if he ends up there he’ll do his best to make things work.
It could be worse. New Orleans is a fun town, one of the most interesting places in the US. It’s also one of the most distinct and charming.
It occurs to us that in much of the south, meaning the parts of the south that are Baptist or Evangelical, New Orleans has a bad reputation. We have no idea what he’s heard about it growing up in upstate South Carolina but we certainly heard that here in NC. So actually being there was a revelation, and not least of all the richness of the music and the textures of many different cultures.
It’s possible to craft a distinct identity there, incorporating the many elements of the city, that is highly marketable.
On the other hand, he recently said that he would prefer to stay at Duke. If he really hates the idea of playing in New Orleans, he has at least one option: withdraw and wait until next year.
It won’t happen but it’s still nice to have options.
