In Chapel Hill, some of the issues Sylvia Hatchell is being investigated for have emerged and one is accusations that she has made racist comments including, allegedly, a comment that her players would be “hanged from trees with nooses.”
She also allegedly had the team engage in a “war chant” to honor the Native American ancestry of an assistant coach and supposedly told her team she knew she couldn’t win with a bunch of “old mules.”
She is also accused of downplaying or casting doubt on injuries including a concussion and allegedly tried to pressure players to play with injuries.
Her attorney Wade Smith - you may remember him from the Duke lacrosse hoax - disputes the charges.
Parents of the players are involved and the situation for UNC is embarrassing so whatever happens, our guess is UNC won't let it linger for long.
